Frequently Asked Questions

Based on customer emails, these are our top questions – click to see the answers

Who rides Bolivia Hop buses?

You’ll meet travelers of all ages and from all over the world. As you can see from the reviews left by passengers, many make lifelong friends on the bus!

We’ve had over 300,000 passengers from over 85 countries! The average age is 31, with the youngest being 10 months old and the oldest 85 years old.

65% of our passengers are women. Several people have contacted us to tell us they met someone on the Bolivia Hop bus and are now married!

Luckily, we haven’t received any messages from couples mentioning they’ve divorced yet!

Do the buses arrive on time?

Bolivia Hop is an extremely punctual service, especially compared to other Bolivian bus companies, which are unfortunately frequently late (as can be seen from their TripAdvisor reviews).

If you have a tour or hotel booked and, in the unlikely event that our bus is delayed, our onboard guides will assist you by calling your tours and hotels to assist you in any way possible, but this should never happen with Bolivia Hop.

What currency is used for payment?

Our prices are in US dollars (USD). For card payments other than US dollars, your bank will automatically convert the currency at its standard exchange rate.

Who are the onboard travel hosts?

Our entire team is made up of local bilingual Peruvians and Bolivians . Don’t just take our word for it—check out the reviews and you’ll see that everyone LOVES our guides!

But here’s the thing: these aren’t your typical tour guides reciting dates and giving long speeches. They’re your local travel hosts, here to share what life is really like in Bolivia and Peru. From cultural trivia to behind-the-scenes stories, they’ll give you an authentic, unfiltered look at both countries.

Like… did you know that Bolivia has two capitals? Or that 5 of the last 6 Peruvian presidents ended up in jail? Or that the minimum wage in both countries is around $300 a month? These are the fascinating facts our team loves to share (and yes, we pay them way more than that!).

More than anything, they’ll feel like your best Bolivian and Peruvian friends: They’ll help you try the local food (at local prices!), give you tips on what to see and what to avoid, and make sure you make the most of every minute along the way.

Is Bolivia Hop a tourist way to travel?

There’s a misconception that Bolivia Hop, by simplifying and facilitating travel in Bolivia and Peru, is a tourist service.

But what really happens on other public buses? The bus goes directly from A to B (no hidden stops), everyone puts on their headphones and sleeps, and you don’t learn anything about what you’re passing by or receive tips on any destination.

Bolivia Hop is not only a much safer and easier way to travel, but it also offers a much more authentic local experience. A local tour guide will offer you information that’s hard to find in guidebooks or blogs, and will make stops at hidden spots and neighborhood restaurants that, once again, aren’t listed in any guidebook.

An authentic local experience with European standards of safety and service!

How do I add accommodation and tours to my trip?

There are 3 ways:

  1. Book your trip (for example, on Airbnb or Booking.com)
  2. On our app: After booking, you can add tours and accommodation to your trip. Don’t worry, our partners always reserve spots for our guests.
  3. On the bus: Our guide will hand out a sign-up sheet for tours and accommodation. You can sign up on the bus and pay the guide directly in cash.

Can I book for a group of 3 or more people?

Of course! All dates booked for buses, tours, or any other activities will apply to the entire group. From our app, you can control everything for you and your group (or they can log in with their own code!).

Contact us if you need help planning your group trip, as we know it can be a bit complicated.

All people in groups of 3 or more can get a special discount of $10 per person with the code GRUPO.

How does the bus know where to pick me up?

There are two ways:

  1. Our onboard guide will ask you where you’re staying at each destination and make sure we pick you up there for the next trip.
  2. In the app, you can choose where you want the bus to pick you up, and the app will tell you what time. It’s that easy!

Can I just follow the recommended itinerary?

Yes, in fact, most of our passengers do, and it’s already set up in their app after booking their pass.

The recommended itinerary was designed so you can see and do everything in a short time, but also so you have plenty of time for yourself.

Don’t forget that with Bolivia Hop everything is flexible, and you can make last-minute changes during your trip or simply travel without a plan and use our app wherever you are.

Where can I store my luggage while on a tour?

During your bus ride, your luggage will always be secure in our spacious storage area under the bus. However, if you’re ever on a tour and need to store your luggage, our onboard guides will inform you of local hotels and restaurants that can help you store your luggage for free.

Do I need to book in advance?

We’re proud that, thanks to the recommendations of our former Hoppers, our tickets frequently sell out, so we recommend booking early. Remember, once you have your ticket, you can change your departure date up to 12 hours beforehand.

Can I change my ticket for another one after booking?

Of course, if you’d like to change your ticket to one that better suits your travel plans, please email us to proceed. Depending on the new ticket price and the timing of your request, the team will provide you with the available options.

Does traveling with Bolivia Hop help local communities?

Yes, absolutely.

Bolivia Hop and Peru Hop were founded by Irish people who moved to Peru and realized they had missed out on a lot of the country during their travels. So, they partnered with locals to develop a system that would allow people to discover the authentic Bolivia and Peru.

By taking you to places most tourists don’t know about, you’re helping local communities, who often live below the poverty line, have a source of income. Simply buying breakfast, a snack, or a little water here or there really helps these communities.

Plus, 95% of our staff are young Bolivians and Peruvians, and we pay more than other tour and bus companies. They often use their salaries to help their families (it’s common in both countries for children, parents, and grandparents to all live in the same small house).

Remember, most tourists fly with multi-million dollar airlines or travel on public buses owned by millionaires, making no stops between destinations and benefiting local communities.

Don’t be a typical tourist; discover the REAL Bolivia and Peru, and make this a win-win situation for both you and the local communities.
